Calcium nitrate fertilizers are synthetically derived compound that takes on a salt-like appearance. It is widely used in fertilizer solutions for house plants, garden plants, and crops, or as a fertilizer in its own right. Calcium nitrate is the only water-soluble calcium source and is most frequently used in liquid fertilizers or as a foliar spray for direct application to plant leaves.

Why use Calcium Nitrate fertilizers?

Calcium nitrate contains both calcium and nitrogen which the plants need to survive as nutrients. Calcium is important for certain plants to be able to grow seeds and it also allows a plant to produce better fruit quality with a longer shelf-life. Calcium is an essential factor in the development of plant cell walls and a good calcium supply in a plant can help to ensure strong cell walls, protecting the plant against disease and stress. Most farmers understand nitrogen as an essential nutrient that is needed by growing plants in large quantities. Nitrogen is a crucial component in amino acid and chlorophyll production, and a good supply of nitrogen will usually result in a lush, green plant that is clearly thriving.  It prevents blossom end rot and aids plant growth and nutrition.

Deficiency Symptoms of Calcium and Nitrogen In Plants

Calcium deficiency symptoms appear initially as localized tissue necrosis leading to stunted plant growth, necrotic leaf margins on young leaves or curling of the leaves, and eventual death of terminal buds and root tips. Generally, the new growth and rapidly growing tissues of the plant are affected first. The mature leaves are rarely if ever affected because calcium accumulates to high concentrations in older leaves.[5] Calcium deficiencies in plants are associated with reduced height, fewer nodes, and less leaf area.

Some symptoms of nitrogen deficiency (in the absence or low supply) are given below :

  1. The chlorophyll content of the plant leaves is reduced which results in a pale yellow color (chlorosis). Older leaves turn completely yellow.
  2. Flowering, fruiting, protein, and starch contents are reduced. Reduction in protein results in stunted growth and dormant lateral buds.

Disease

Plants look thin, and the condition is called general starvation

Instructions To Use Calcium Nitrate Fertilizers

  • Calcium nitrate fertilizers can be utilized as a foliar shower. This is best in treating and forestalling pests and diseases.
  • As a side-dress, utilize 3.5 pounds of Ca(NO3) per 100 feet (1.59 kg per 30.48 m). Blend the fertilizer into the soil, being mindful so as to keep it off of foliage.
  • Water the territory well to permit the fertilizer to begin saturating the soil and find a good pace.
  • For a foliar splash to address calcium insufficiency and include nitrogen, include 1 cup of calcium nitrate to 25 gallons of water (128 grams to 94.64 liters).
  • You can likewise utilize it to treat magnesium deficiencies when it is consolidated at a pace of 3 to 5 pounds of magnesium sulfate in 25 gallons of water (1.36 to 2.27 kg. in 94.64 liters).
  • Spray when the sun is low and plants have been watered adequately.
