Plastic mulch also called mulching film or mulch film is a product made from polyethylene used for suppressing weed, conserving water and increasing the yield of crops. Plastic mulches are perforated with holes with which farmers can plant their seeds.
Product Features:
  • Colour: Grey & Black
  • Thickness: 35 Micron
  • Length: 300m
  • Width: 1.2m & 1.5m

NB: You will need up to 9 rolls per acre farmland.

  • Alters soil temperature as dark mulches intercept sunlight Warming and provide faster growth.
  • Provides moisture retention by reducing water lost due to evaporation. Thus allows less water for irrigation.
  • Managing by preventing sunlight reaching soil, which otherwise inhibit perennial weeds.
  • Also reduces leaching of fertilizer, improves crop quality, and reduces root damage.

DESCRIPTION

Mulch Film which is also known as Plastic mulch is made from polyethylene used for suppressing weed, conserving water and increasing the yield of crops. It is perforated with holes with which farmers can easily plant their seeds while using the Mulch film.

Mulch film can be said to be a fairly new technology in Nigeria, which has enabled a lot of farmers to increase their yields whilst reducing the cost of labour needed for weeding activities on their farms.

How to Install Mulch Film:

  • The first stage in installing a Mulch film to make beds or ridges. The seed beds must be made in such a way that the top of the bed will be flat.
  • The Mulch film can then be laid on top of the bed with the corners of the Mulch film tucked into the soil. Pegs can also be used to hold the plastic mulch to the seed bed and the soil.
  • Some farmers prefer to make holes on the Mulch film after installation on the seed bed. Some farmers also make these holes before placing the mulch on the bed.
  • After the completion of the installation of the mulch film, seeds or seedlings can be planted on the holes created on the mulch.

Benefits of Mulch Film:

  • Mulch Film can be used as weed control.
  • It prevents sunlight from reaching the soil. When the weeds do not get sunlight, photosynthesis is impacted, which prevents their growth. Weeds can reduce the yield of a crop by as much as 98%.
  • It increases the yield of crops, helping farmers make more money.
  • In some locations, Mulch film can heat up the soil and make it possible to plant early. For example, in cold climates, Mulch film can enable farmers to plant tropical crops during the cold season because of the heating effect of the mulching film.
  • Helps in the retention of soil moisture, as it reduces evaporation and makes more water available to plants. It also reduces the frequency of irrigation. During the period of lean rainfall, Mulch film can be very useful in conserving water for crops.
  • It also makes more fertilizer nutrients available to crops.
  • It reduces the rate of erosion and leaching of fertilizer.
  • It reduces compaction of the soil.
  • The crusting effect of sunlight and rain is reduced when Mulch film is used.
  • Helps in minimal or no root damage.
  • Controls pest and disease. The heat caused by plastic mulch can be negatively impact some soil borne pests and diseases. Lesser pests and diseases mean better yield.
