Growing Onions seeds

  • Planting onion seeds can take more time, so germinate your seeds indoors first to get the process going: Onion plants grow well in raised beds or raised rows at least 4 inches high.
  • Start them indoors about 6 weeks before you plan to transplant them to the garden.
  • Select a location with full sun, the more energy they can get from the sunlight, the larger their bulbs can grow.
  • At planting time, add about an inch of compost to the bottom of each row before planting.
  • Fertilize every few weeks with nitrogen to get big bulbs. Cease fertilizing when the onions push the soil away and the bulbing process has started.
  • Once bulbs have started to develop, mulch with a light ½-inch layer of straw.
  • Pull any onions that send up flower stalks; this means that the bulbs have stopped growing. These onions will not store well but can be used in recipes within a few days.

Common Question Asked in Onions Production

Question: Can I plant my onion deep in the soil to avoid being eaten by birds?

Answer: Do not plant onions deeper than 1.5 inches into the ground. deeper than that, they will struggle to do well.

Question: My onion is ready to harvest but it’s drizzling every day. Can i harvest?

Answer: You can still harvest onions when it’s wet, but they might rot in storage. It won’t hurt your onions to be left in the ground for a little while longer, so wait until there is a dry day to harvest.

Question: If the onion is breaking, should I cover the exposed side with soil?

Answer:  The area at the base of the stem, where it meets the bulb, is indeed vulnerable. If the bulbs are still small and far from ready to harvest, you might want to cover them with a mulch that will simultaneously protect them, keep moisture in, suppress weeds, and allow air circulation.
