Single Super Phosphate (SSP) fertilizer is an excellent source of three plant nutrients. The P component reacts in soil similarly to other soluble fertilizers. The presence of both P and sulfur (S) in it can be an agronomic advantage where both of these nutrients are deficient. In agronomic studies where SSP is demonstrated to be superior to other P fertilizers, it is usually due to the S and/or Ca that it contains. The product has found widespread use, when locally available, for fertilizing pastures where both P and S are needed. As a source of P alone, it often costs more than other more concentrated fertilizers, therefore it has declined in popularity.

Plants need the phosphorus element as a building material for the formation of certain proteins and other organic substances. This element also plays a role in various physiological processes in the plant, such as assimilation and respiration. That is why a lack of phosphorus has a very negative effect on the yield of crops. The amount of phosphorus fertilization depends on the amount of plant-available phosphorus in the soil and the requirement of the crop.

Chemical Properties of Single Super Phosphate (SSP) fertilizer

  • Phosphorus content: 7 to 9% (16 to 20% P2O5)
  • Calcium (Ca) content: 18 to 21%
  • S content: 11 to 12%pH: < 2

When to use Single superphosphate fertilizer

Directly at planting is the best time to use superphosphate fertilizer. This is because it promotes root formation. It is also useful when plants are beginning to fruit, supplying nutrients to fuel larger fruit production. During this period, use the nutrient as a side dressing.

it is recommended that the product is used every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season. In perennials, apply in early spring to jump-start healthy plants and blooming.
