AFAN Predicts That There Will Be Food Shortages In Nigeria

According to the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Nigeria will have trouble supplying food between December 2022 and March 2023.

In order to prevent future food crises, the AFAN also urged the federal government to offer incentives to farmers so they could maintain their crops throughout the year.

In a phone interview with Thisday, Mr. Kabir Ibrahim, the National President of AFAN, stated that “the federal and state governments should work together. Better synergy than what exists currently must exist.

The execution of the new policy should be a cooperative effort amongst all stakeholders, and all actions in the agricultural sector should be coordinated. All stakeholders must speak with a single voice.

“That is to say, you can’t have the Federal Ministry of Agriculture doing one thing and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) doing another, and because of the flood and the insecurity in the food system, Nigerian farmers should be encouraged to farm all year round as you can see the flood has washed everything,” the statement continued.

He suggested that the federal government implement crop intensification technology with investments in climate-smart agriculture.

Food Shortages In Nigeria Early 2023

“The food system is broken all around the world,” he declared. The world needs to implement a year-round farming system rather than relying on rental agriculture.

“The government must make significant investments in agriculture since it is the best and only means of bringing people out of poverty. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include reducing poverty and ending hunger, and we must work toward achieving those goals in order to achieve peace because some of the problems we face with insecurity are caused by poverty because people who are busy with other activities are less likely to engage in kidnapping and banditry.

Ibrahim noted that meddling in 2019 prevented the defunct Agricultural Promotion Policy (APP) from being fully implemented. He also said that the former minister’s failure to properly implement the APP was one of the reasons he was fired.

He thus pleaded with the agriculture minister to properly implement the just-launched National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (NATIP) to minimize Food Shortages In Nigeria Early in 2023.
