Steps in growing Tomato

1. Nursery Establishment

Fill tray holes 3/4, press to compact and plant seeds. Place seed trays in dark and warm location. Seeds start to sprout between 1-2 weeks, move to sunny spot.

2. Land Preparation and Transplanting

Soil has to be ploughed to a depth of 20-30cm. Incorporate well decomposed manure into prepared land, this is done before transplanting usually 3-4 weeks after sowing in nursery. Hardening carried out 6-10 days before transplanting.

Spacing of planting holes ranges from 60*45 cm or 60*60 cm and in the case of a greenhouse 8*15 m.

3. Watering

Tomatoes are a heavy water user, thereby requiring frequent irrigation to delay maturity and prolong plant productivity. For open field cultivation, furrow and drip irrigation are effective.

Plant has a high rate of nutrient(Phosphorus, nitrogen and Potassium) consumption. Organic fertilizers are a good source of all. When flowering starts, apply nutrients based fertilizer.

4. Management and Harvesting

Management of indeterminate tomato include training and trellising (applying support to plant vertically and horizontally), de-suckering (removal of lateral shoot), pruning (removing old leaves), mulching (excluding light, raises temperatures).

Sodagar matures mid-late and can be picked by hand for the fresh market.
