Support for a Diversified Economy

Umuahia, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for the support of agricultural scientists and experts as Nigeria works to diversify its economy. Tinubu stressed the importance of food security and the need for Nigeria to tap into the expertise and technical skills of agricultural scientists.

Tinubu’s remarks came during the 11th convocation of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State. He was represented by the Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Prof Garba Sharubutu.

Prof. Sharubutu noted the university’s hard work in fulfilling its mandate, despite the challenges facing the nation. He also commended the graduates for their achievements.

Nigeria’s economy is heavily reliant on oil and gas production. However, this has made the country vulnerable to fluctuations in global oil prices. Diversifying the economy would help to reduce this vulnerability and create new jobs. Agriculture is a key sector of the Nigerian economy. It employs millions of people and accounts for a significant portion of GDP. Investing in agricultural research and development would help to boost productivity and increase food security. Agricultural scientists and experts play a vital role in developing new technologies and practices that can improve agricultural productivity. They also provide valuable extension services to farmers.
